Are You Moving Too Fast?
Often, in our connected and fast-moving lives we bounce from one thought to another. As soon as we complete one task, we shift to something else. Regardless of whether we are taking action on our big rocks or not, today we rarely take enough time to stop and listen to ourselves. Sure, we may hear what is going on around us or we may invest 10 minutes in the morning listening to a mindfulness app. However, how often do we pause in the moment, to really hear what is being said…or not being said. Great leaders listen. If you want to be a more effective leader, then start with listening to yourself so you are in the right headspace to hear to others.
What Is Your Breath Saying?
Professional performers learn how to use their breath to express the emotion and meaning of the message they are conveying. This is a conscious outward expression, often exaggerated to ensure the full effect on the audience. As a result, the audience feels the message instead of just hearing the words. What if you were more attuned to what your breaths are saying? The sigh of relief, the shocking gasp, the warm sensual escape, and the excited intake are all expressions. Each breath’s voice has the potential to enlighten you to the real emotion you are feeling. Your feelings influence the actions you take. Moreover, each of your breath’s message is communicating something to others around you. Do your breaths and your words align into a cohesive message?
Masterful leaders listen!
The most masterful leaders listen to themselves and to others. They understand that to lead others, they must lead themselves first. Mase ignite their growth mindset and stay attuned to what they are feeling in the moment. They are aware of their state of mind and reset their being to ensure an open and curious posture.
Masterful leaders also create a non-judgmental container that invites others to freely express their thoughts and feelings. When leaders truly hear and feel what is being spoken, they balance the conversation in a magical way. Think about yourself. When was the last time you felt truly heard and how did that make you feel? It doesn’t matter if both parties agree, because when you feel heard, when you are able to contribute your thoughts to your leader, you are significantly more engaged. The return on investment is huge. When you first listen, you can transform your team’s effectiveness and engagement, which drives sustainable results.
